Birregurra appeals to community for new sporting centre

More than 150 Birregurra residents turned out to witness the launch of a detailed Master Plan for the redevelopment of the town’s dilapidated recreation reserve.

Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsey, Liberal candidate for Corangamite Sarah Henderson and Colac Otway Shire Councillor Brian Crook all addressed the crowd and implored them to support the appeal and kick start the fundraising efforts for the reserve’s redevelopment.

Chairman of the town’s Recreation Reserve Committee, Paul Drewry unveiled the master plan and said it’s up to the town’s residents to get behind the project.

“What this night is about is the people of Birregurra pledging their support for this redevelopment,” Drewry said.

“It’s not just the members of the football, tennis and netball clubs who need to get behind this, it’s about the Birregurra community coming together to create a recreation facility we can all be proud of, and utilise for years to come.”

The master plan includes an updated pavilion with a new function room, kitchen, changerooms and toilets, redeveloped netball and tennis courts and improved lighting and playing surfaces on the main oval.

The Recreation Reserve Committee aims to raise $200,000 through the appeal before applying to various funding bodies including local, state and federal governments to meet the cost of the project.
